Serenity

I just got back from seeing Serenity, and unfortunatly, I'm of two minds on my feelings on the movie.

Firstly, I love the movie. It's everything that I missed from the series. The characters, the writing, the humor, everything. It's all there. Not much to complain about, really.

Asides from two points. One of which is a spoiler, so I'll leave that one till later. The first is mostly to do with how the movie was shot. In the series, the cameramen were encouraged to let certain things slide. Like how they framed a shot. If they messed up when framing a shot, Joss Whedon told them to keep it, because it helped give the series the feel that you were actually there. This is especially noticable in one of the first episodes. After Mal gets thrown out a bar window, there's a close up shot of his face. But his face is almost off the right side of the frame. They add a nice cgi moon on the left, and it becomes a very beautiful shot. I think they kind of abused this in the movie, however. It shows up several times, and is really noticable. The times where this type of shot shows up, it really has a planned feel to it. Same thing applies to many of the other 'mistakes' that happened in shoting and post-production of the show. In the movie, many of them seemed to be planned, just to match up with shots from the series. Kind of annoying.

And the other thing. The part that will spoil the movie if you haven't already seen it. So if you haven't seen the movie, don't read this paragraph. I mean it. Don't. Skip it. This part is what makes me kind-of-sorta not like the movie. What part is that? Well, two parts, really. The part where Shepard dies, and the part where Walsh dies. My two favorite characters, and they had to kill them. Although I get the feeling that the actors didn't really want to have much to do with the show/movie anymore. I got that feeling from how much they were actually IN the movie, and how many lines they had. But still. They died. That fact, along with how the movie was shot, gives me the feeling that Firefly isn't going to be coming back to TV, no matter how much the fans want it to. Even if it did come back, it wouldn't be the same show. Which is a shame, because that show had so much to offer. Several things that were only even hinted at in the first season could have taken several seasons to play out. Thing like the story behind Shepard, for example. Not so much the story with River, as I'm pretty sure that would have been at least mostly solved by the end of the first or second season.

I get the feeling that Josh Wheadon knew that the show wasn't going to make a comeback on television, especially with Fox's record of cancelling really good shows. He knew this, so he probably took everything that he had planed for the River story ark, and put it in the movie, if only in after cutting out several parts and compresing it. Although I'm very glad that several parts of the Firefly universe got closure, I'm also very sad that several parts got cut tragically short.

On a side note, it's really hard to write out my thoughts on a really good movie while watching a really good tv mini-series on dvd. What mini-series, you ask? Well that would be Band of Brothers. Great series.

Still no word on the kitten. I'm wondering if the lady I'm (trying) to get the kitten from is even getting my emails. I sent a reply that didn't seem to get through. I wonder if the fact that she's using yahoo mail has anything to do with it. Proably not. Who knows. If all else fails, I can always go rescue a cat from the SPCA.

Handed in a resume to my old high school. Trying to see if I can't get myself hired as a system admin, or possibly web designer. If I only get a part-time job, I'll still be happy. Mostly because it'll let me do what I really love doing, and that's tinkering and hacking with Linux.

Speaking of tinkering with computers, I've got most of the parts for the core of a new gaming computer picked out. I've got the motherboard, the cpu, and the ram picked out. Now I just need pick the hard drives, the psu, the sound card, the cooling system and the monitor. Oh, and save up all the money I need to buy said system. Hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg. Or if it does, that I'll be able to recover quite quickly from buying the parts and maxing out my credit card.
