Almost There!

I know I haven't been updating recently. Things have just been fairly hectic this week.

We dove into a new project today at work, and it was... interesting. We licensed a framework from another company to boot-start our development process. This was so that instead of having to write a bunch of modules from scratch, we could have most of the work done already. We had the notion when we licensed this framework that it was done and stable, ready to be used. This was not the case however.

Today we had two of the developers from the company come in. They're here to take a look at what we want to do, and to point us in the right direction. They're also here to let us know when we've got things back-asswards. One of them spent the day going over our project roadmap with our lead tech, to make sure that what we want is what their platform is going to be able to deliver. The other one spent the day with me and another programmer to help us get our hands dirty with the code base.

At least, that's how things were supposed to go. Instead, the coder spending time with me and my co-worker spent most of their time fixing bugs that we were finding. This is not a good sign. Another not-so-good sign is that we chose this framework because it was built on top of the Zend Framework, a really nice MVC framework for PHP -- but this framework that we licensed isn't very Zend-y. With this framework, we're kinda locked into one way of doing things, instead of being able to mold the framework to our desires.

Hopefully tomorrow we'll be able to get this all sorted out and back on track.

I'm actually pretty excited for tomorrow, but not because of work. I'm going to go ahead and assume you're saying/thinking "Why Sean? Why are you excited for tomorrow?".

Well, it's simple. Tomorrow is the last day that I'll be taking the bus to work. After Saturday, I'll be living downtown! This is exciting for so many reasons. No more two to three hour commute home -- it'll be a thirty minute walk. No more sitting on the bus listing to people talk about things I'd rather not hear about. No more standing in the cold or rain ( or cold rain ) waiting for a bus. No more rushing in the morning to catch a bus that leaves just as I get to the bus stop, making me twenty minutes late for work. No more buying bus passes. And here's the fun one: no more worrying about catching the last SkyTrain home when I go drinking with friends downtown.

This is going to be so very very awesome. Not just because I'm living downtown. I'm planning to use the time I'll save on my commute to start working on a few websites I have in mind -- including a re-write of this blog on the Zend Framework. I'll also be able to do more photowalks, because I won't have to drive for twenty minutes to find scenery that's interesting ( to me -- I'm not really a fan of suburbs and mountains for photographic subjects ).
